SUMMARY:Precision Livestock Farming: Beef & Forage Systems Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Two Days of Beef\, Forage and Technology Education\nThe University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture will hold the Precision Livestock Farming: Beef & Forage Systems Field Day September 22 and 23 at the Middle Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Spring Hill. The two-day program combines producer education on beef cattle and forage management with a closer look at precision livestock technologies being used in research and production systems. \nRegistration begins at 8 a.m. Central on the first day. The cost is $15 per person per day\, while University of Tennessee students\, faculty and staff may attend free. Advance registration is required. \nBeef and Forage Topics on Day One\nThe September 22 program focuses on production questions that cattle and forage producers face in the field. Presentations will examine cow efficiency\, warm-season forages\, changes in Tennessee’s beef cattle industry\, conflicts involving black vultures and considerations related to the beef product itself. The day also includes time for participants to visit vendors and talk with University of Tennessee specialists. \nFor producers\, the value of the first day is the mix of animal\, forage and management topics. Cow size and efficiency can affect feed needs and long-term herd economics\, while warm-season forage strategies can influence grazing options during periods when cool-season grasses slow down. Wildlife conflicts and product quality add another layer to the management decisions cattle operators may face. \nPrecision Livestock Technologies on Day Two\nThe September 23 session shifts toward precision livestock farming. University of Tennessee faculty will introduce the university’s precision-livestock work and take part in a panel discussion covering animal science\, beef genetics\, engineering and related technologies. Participants will then travel by wagon to precision-livestock research pastures for a field-based look at the systems and research being used at the center. The second day concludes at 12:30 p.m. Central. \nThe event is intended for beef and forage producers as well as others interested in how new monitoring\, data and management technologies may fit into livestock production.
