SUMMARY:Seed Farming 101: Economics and Production
DESCRIPTION:Seed Farming 101 will introduce farmers to producing seed as an agricultural enterprise and explore how seed production could become another source of farm income. \nThe free workshop will be held Thursday\, October 8\, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Appalachia Service Project’s new Highland Volunteer and Training Center\, 4505 Bristol Highway\, Johnson City\, Tennessee. Lunch will follow the morning session and is included with registration. \nThe Appalachian Resource Conservation and Development Council\, or ARC&D\, is partnering with the Utopian Seed Project for the workshop. Chris Smith of the Utopian Seed Project will lead the program. \n\n\nSeed Production as a Farm Enterprise\nSeed Farming 101 is designed specifically for farmers interested in learning more about seed production\, including the economics behind growing seed for sale. \nFor diversified farms\, producing seed may offer another way to generate income while helping strengthen the supply of seeds grown and adapted within the region. \nThe Utopian Seed Project promotes crop diversity\, regional food systems\, and seed sovereignty. Its Appalachian Growers Seed Collective brings together regional farmers who grow\, share\, and sell seeds\, emphasizing varieties adapted to Southern Appalachian growing conditions. \nWorkshop participants will learn the practical side of seed production\, including techniques for collecting\, cleaning\, drying\, and storing seed. The program will also address the economic considerations farmers should understand when evaluating seed production as part of their farm operation. \nARC&D describes seed farming as a possible way for producers to diversify farm income. \nPart of an All About Seeds Day\nSeed Farming 101 is the first of two seed-focused workshops scheduled for October 8. \nThe farmer-focused morning session runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon\, followed by lunch. A separate Seed Saving 101: Backyard Seed Saving for Gardeners workshop will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. that evening. \nFarmers interested primarily in commercial or farm-scale seed production should register for the morning Seed Farming 101 session. \nRegistration for Seed Farming 101 is Free!\nSeed Farming 101 is free to attend\, and registration includes lunch. Space is limited\, so we recommend registering in advance. \nDate: Thursday\, October 8\, 2026\nTime: 9:30 a.m.-noon\, with lunch to follow\nLocation: Highland Volunteer and Training Center\, 4505 Bristol Highway\, Johnson City\, TN 37601\nCost: Free\nPresented by: Appalachian Resource Conservation & Development Council and Utopian Seed Project\nInstructor: Chris Smith\, Utopian Seed Project \n  \nRead our full-length articles about educational opportunities here!

SUMMARY:NC AgVentures Farm Grant Applicant Webinar — October 8
DESCRIPTION:AgVentures October Webinar Explains the Farm Grant Process\nAgVentures October Webinar gives North Carolina farmers and eligible community organizations an opportunity to learn how the NC AgVentures Farm Grant Program works before the 2026 application deadline. This online session begins October 8 and will cover the same core information offered in the program’s other applicant webinars. \nNC AgVentures provides competitive grants of up to $10\,000 for agricultural projects intended to increase farm profits. The program is administered through NC State Extension with funding from the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission. \nWhat Applicants Should Know\nNC AgVentures says eligible farm applicants must be North Carolina residents with an established independent farm operation in the state. The farm must have generated revenue for at least one year. Local nonprofit community organizations may also qualify for projects that support agricultural profitability. \nThe 2026 grant cycle will accept no more than 200 applications\, so interested applicants should prepare early. Farmers are also expected to work with their local Extension agent during the proposal process. \nApplications Open October 15\nThe application portal opens October 15. The final deadline is December 15 at 6 p.m.\, but the portal will close earlier if the program receives 200 applications. The applicant webinar is intended to explain the process\, highlight updates and give prospective applicants a chance to ask questions before submitting.

SUMMARY:NC AgVentures Grant Application Webinar
DESCRIPTION:NC AgVentures will repeat its Farm Grant Application Overview Webinar on October 8 at noon\, giving North Carolina farmers another opportunity to review eligibility\, project planning\, and application requirements. \nLearn How to Prepare an NC AgVentures Application\nNorth Carolina farmers considering an NC AgVentures Farm Grant can learn about the program and application process during the NC AgVentures Grant Application Webinar on November 9 at 6:30 p.m. \nThe online workshop helps prospective applicants understand the grant program before submitting a proposal: the North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission funds NC AgVentures\, an NC State Extension program. The program provides competitive cost-share grants to eligible family farms and qualifying community organizations for projects intended to increase farm income and strengthen agricultural businesses. \nNC AgVentures offers three applicant webinars during the 2026 grant cycle\, including the November 9 session. NC AgVentures says each webinar will cover the same information\, so farmers can choose the session that best fits their schedules. \n  \n \nGrants of Up to $10\,000 Available \nNC AgVentures offers awards of up to $10\,000. Eligible farm applicants must operate an established\, independent North Carolina farm that has generated revenue for at least one year. \nFarm projects may include efforts to add new crops\, increase efficiency\, expand production\, develop new markets\, or add infrastructure that can improve profitability. Previous projects have included greenhouses\, farm stores\, packing facilities\, labor-saving equipment\, and equipment for value-added production. Applicants cannot use grant funds to purchase land or animals. \nRecipients must contribute at least 15% of the total project cost in cash. For example\, a farmer requesting grant funding must develop a total project budget large enough to include that required contribution. \nThe program also offers Community Grants for nonprofit organizations\, cooperatives\, and government organizations whose projects directly benefit at least three farms. \nExtension Agents Play a Role\nFarm applicants must work with an N.C. Cooperative Extension agent on their proposals. \nNC AgVentures encourages applicants to contact their Extension agent early and requires applicants to contact an agent by December 1 to schedule time to discuss the proposed project and review the application. Farmers who do not already work closely with an Extension agent can contact their local Extension office for assistance. \nThe webinar can help applicants understand what information they should begin gathering before that consultation. \nThe application includes sections covering farm and contact information\, the proposed project\, project viability\, and the budget. Reviewers consider factors such as whether the project can increase farm income\, improve efficiency\, create or maintain employment\, introduce a new opportunity\, and become financially sustainable. \nApplication Window Opens October 15\nNC AgVentures will begin accepting applications October 15. The deadline is December 15 at 6 p.m.\, but applicants should not assume they can wait until the deadline. \nThe program will accept up to 200 applications for the 2026 cycle. If 200 completed applications arrive before December 15\, the online portal will close early. Each farm may submit only one application. \nFor Appalachian Highlands Farmers Magazine readers\, eligibility depends on location. NC AgVentures serves several counties within or near the magazine’s North Carolina coverage area\, including Alleghany\, Ashe\, Surry\, Wilkes\, and Yadkin counties. Many western North Carolina counties are instead served by the separate WNC AgOptions program. Farmers should verify which grant program covers their county before applying. \nAdvance registration is required for the November 9 webinar through NC AgVentures. \n  \nRead our full-length articles about educational and grant opportunities here!
