SUMMARY:Farm Disaster Preparedness Workshop Helps Farmers Plan Ahead
DESCRIPTION:The Farm Disaster Preparedness Workshop will be held September 17-18 at Rural Resources in Greeneville\, Tenn. The Appalachian Resource Conservation & Development Council is organizing the two-day program with University of Tennessee agricultural specialist Shelli Rampold. \nThe workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days. Registration is $30 and includes lunch\, and fee waivers are available for farmers who need help covering the cost. \nThe program helps farmers identify vulnerabilities before an emergency and make practical plans to protect people\, livestock\, property\, and farm operations. \n\nAsheville\, N.C. (November 11\, 2024) – FEMA opens a Disaster Recovery Center in the Asheville Mall to help survivors apply for assistance after Hurricane Helene. \nFarm Disaster Preparedness Workshop Focuses on Farm Risks\nOne central activity will be farm risk assessment. Participants will examine parts of a farm that could become serious problems during flooding\, storms\, power failures\, or other emergencies. \nThat includes what organizers describe as pressure-point mapping. Farmers identify places where one failure could quickly create several other problems. A washed-out access road\, for example\, could prevent a producer from reaching livestock. Fence damage could create animal-control problems. Loss of electricity could affect wells\, refrigeration\, or other essential systems. \nMapping those pressure points gives farmers a chance to consider alternatives before they face an emergency. \nFarm Disaster Preparedness Workshop Includes Emergency Scenarios\nThe Farm Disaster Preparedness Workshop will also use disaster simulations and planning exercises to help participants think through decisions they might have to make during a real emergency. \nPreparing for a disaster is not only about protecting buildings or equipment. Farmers may need plans for moving livestock\, maintaining water supplies\, reaching isolated areas of a farm\, communicating with family or employees\, and keeping essential business functions operating. \nPlanning can make emergency decisions faster and more organized. \nHurricane Helene Showed the Need for Farm Planning\nThe workshop comes as Northeast Tennessee farmers continue to learn from Hurricane Helene. The September 2024 storm damaged farmland\, roads\, fencing\, buildings\, and other agricultural infrastructure across parts of the region. \nFor many producers\, recovery also required navigating disaster-assistance programs and gathering records to document losses. The experience showed that preparedness includes paperwork as well as physical farm planning. \nMaintaining photographs\, receipts\, inventories\, maps\, and other records before a disaster can make it easier to document damage afterward. \nFarm Disaster Preparedness Workshop Covers Recovery Resources\nParticipants will also learn more about disaster assistance and the resources farmers may need after an emergency. \nThe Farm Disaster Preparedness Workshop allows producers to examine their own operations before the next storm\, flood\, or other emergency forces those decisions on them. \nFarmers interested in attending should confirm registration availability and any final program details with Appalachian RC&D before September 17. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nRead our full-length article here!

SUMMARY:Seed Farming 101: Economics and Production
DESCRIPTION:Seed Farming 101 will introduce farmers to producing seed as an agricultural enterprise and explore how seed production could become another source of farm income. \nThe free workshop will be held Thursday\, October 8\, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Appalachia Service Project’s new Highland Volunteer and Training Center\, 4505 Bristol Highway\, Johnson City\, Tennessee. Lunch will follow the morning session and is included with registration. \nThe Appalachian Resource Conservation and Development Council\, or ARC&D\, is partnering with the Utopian Seed Project for the workshop. Chris Smith of the Utopian Seed Project will lead the program. \n\n\nSeed Production as a Farm Enterprise\nSeed Farming 101 is designed specifically for farmers interested in learning more about seed production\, including the economics behind growing seed for sale. \nFor diversified farms\, producing seed may offer another way to generate income while helping strengthen the supply of seeds grown and adapted within the region. \nThe Utopian Seed Project promotes crop diversity\, regional food systems\, and seed sovereignty. Its Appalachian Growers Seed Collective brings together regional farmers who grow\, share\, and sell seeds\, emphasizing varieties adapted to Southern Appalachian growing conditions. \nWorkshop participants will learn the practical side of seed production\, including techniques for collecting\, cleaning\, drying\, and storing seed. The program will also address the economic considerations farmers should understand when evaluating seed production as part of their farm operation. \nARC&D describes seed farming as a possible way for producers to diversify farm income. \nPart of an All About Seeds Day\nSeed Farming 101 is the first of two seed-focused workshops scheduled for October 8. \nThe farmer-focused morning session runs from 9:30 a.m. to noon\, followed by lunch. A separate Seed Saving 101: Backyard Seed Saving for Gardeners workshop will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. that evening. \nFarmers interested primarily in commercial or farm-scale seed production should register for the morning Seed Farming 101 session. \nRegistration for Seed Farming 101 is Free!\nSeed Farming 101 is free to attend\, and registration includes lunch. DESCRIPTION:The Veterans in Agriculture Regional Conference will bring veteran farmers and their families together for two days of agricultural education\, hands-on learning\, farm tours\, and networking in Nashville\, Tennessee. \nThe conference will be held Nov. 5-6\, 2026\, at the Ed Jones Auditorium at the Ellington Agricultural Center\, 416 Hogan Road\, Nashville. The event is part of the Tennessee AgVets Opportunities on FarmLand\, or TN AgVOLs\, program and is being presented through a partnership that includes Appalachian Resource Conservation & Development Council\, the University of Tennessee Center of Farm Management\, Tennessee AgrAbility\, UT Extension\, and other agricultural organizations. \n\n\nAgricultural Training and Hands-On Learning\nThe Veterans in Agriculture Regional Conference connects veterans involved in agriculture with other farmers\, agricultural professionals\, and organizations that provide training and assistance. \nThe two-day program will include farm tours\, workshops\, demonstrations\, and networking opportunities. Participants will learn from agricultural professionals while meeting other veterans who are starting\, operating\, or expanding farms and agricultural businesses. \nThe conference is part of a broader TN AgVOLs effort to help veterans and transitioning service members enter agriculture. The program connects participants with technical assistance\, education\, hands-on training\, and other resources that can help them develop new agricultural businesses or strengthen existing operations. \nResources for Veteran Farmers\nTN AgVOLs works with agricultural organizations across Tennessee to connect veteran farmers with educational opportunities\, internships\, farm mentors\, and other resources. \nThe program also provides information about agricultural training scholarships. TN AgVOLs currently reimburses up to $250 for veterans who complete approved agriculture-related educational programs. Conference organizers also indicate that scholarship assistance is available for the Veterans in Agriculture Regional Conference. \nBeyond formal educational sessions\, the conference will give participants time to build connections with other veteran farmers and agricultural professionals. Those relationships can help beginning farmers identify resources\, learn from established producers\, and become more involved in Tennessee’s agricultural community. \nMeals Included During the Conference\nRegistration includes a light breakfast and lunch each day. According to event organizers\, the conference is open to veterans and their families. \nThe Veterans in Agriculture Regional Conference is the first annual conference organized through the TN AgVOLs initiative. The actual 2027 Master Gardener Intern Training begins February 2 and continues through April 27 at the Ron Ramsey Agricultural Extension Center in Blountville. \nApplications are currently open for the 2027 class. \nTraining Begins in February\nAccepted applicants will participate in Master Gardener training on Tuesday evenings from February 2 through April 27\, 2027\, with sessions scheduled from 6 to 7:30 p.m. \nThe program will combine online lectures with required in-person class sessions. Training will be based at the Ron Ramsey Agricultural Extension Center\, 140 Spurgeon Lane in Blountville. \nThe 2027 program costs $200. \nThe Tennessee Extension Master Gardener program prepares volunteers to share research-based horticultural information and support Extension educational programs within their communities. \nServing Northeast Tennessee Communities\nThe Northeast Tennessee Master Gardener Association includes volunteers representing Sullivan\, Washington\, Unicoi\, Carter\, Johnson\, and Hawkins counties. \nMaster Gardener volunteers support horticultural education and community-service projects throughout the region. Their work may include educational programs\, community gardens\, horticultural demonstrations\, and opportunities to help residents find reliable answers to gardening and landscape questions. \nThe program is intended for people who want to do more than improve their own gardening knowledge. Participants should also be interested in using what they learn to serve their communities as Extension Master Gardener volunteers. \nApply by January 5\nAnyone interested in joining the 2027 class should complete the application process by January 5\, 2027. \nUT-TSU Extension Sullivan County provides the application and additional program information.
