SUMMARY:Fall High Tunnel Organic Nutrient Management
DESCRIPTION:Build Soil Fertility in a High Tunnel\nA hands-on Virginia State University Small Farm Outreach Program workshop on Wednesday\, October 7\, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Warfield\, Virginia\, focuses on nutrient management in high tunnels.   This workshop will show growers how to use organic soil nutrients inside a high tunnel to support fall vegetables. \nAlex Hessler\, a small-farm nutrient management specialist with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation\, will lead the training. This workshop helps growers understand soil fertility in protected growing systems and make practical nutrient-management decisions for cool-season crops. \n\nImage by Zoe Richardson \nOrganic Inputs and Fall Vegetable Production\nHigh tunnels can extend the growing season\, but intensive production can also make careful soil and nutrient management increasingly important. Participants will learn how to use organic nutrient materials to improve soil conditions while supporting productive fall vegetable crops. \nThe session connects soil fertility with crop performance and gives growers an opportunity to consider how nutrient-management practices fit into an overall high-tunnel production plan. \nA Hands-On Outdoor Workshop\nOrganizers plan to include hands-on work in the high tunnel if time permits\, including planting a variety of fall vegetable plants. Because the workshop includes outdoor activity\, participants should dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear. \nThe workshop will be held at 2778 Cut Bank Road in Warfield. You can register through the official Virginia State University event listing. Farmers should check that page for any updates before traveling. \n  \nRead our full-length articles about Educational and grant opportunities here!

SUMMARY:Soil Test Results and Interpretation
DESCRIPTION:Understand What Your Soil Test Is Telling You\nSoil Test Results can provide farmers and landowners with valuable information\, but making sense of the numbers and recommendations is not always straightforward. \nVirginia State University’s Small Farm Outreach Program will offer Soil Test Results and Interpretation on October 7 from 5 to 6 p.m. Eastern. The virtual webinar will help participants understand their soil reports and use the information to make practical management decisions for farms and other properties. \nThe program will walk participants through a soil-test report step by step\, explaining what laboratories test\, why those measurements matter\, and how the results relate to soil management. \n\nPhoto by Neslihan-Gunaydin \nTurn Test Results Into Management Decisions\nA soil test can help producers identify nutrient needs and determine whether soil conditions may be limiting plant growth. But the report becomes most useful when producers understand how to interpret its recommendations. \nThe webinar will explain how farmers and landowners can use soil-test information when making decisions about soil fertility and long-term management. \nParticipants will also learn more about the connection between soil health and productive\, resilient soils. The program will discuss practical strategies producers can use to improve soil conditions over time rather than viewing a soil test as simply a list of numbers. \nBuild Confidence in Soil Management\nThis session is appropriate for people new to soil testing\, as well as producers who have received soil-test reports before but want a better understanding of what the results mean. \nThe goal is to help participants become more confident using soil information when making decisions for their farms\, gardens\, or other properties. \nThe webinar will be held through Microsoft Teams. Participants should install Teams on the device they plan to use\, check their microphone and speakers ahead of time\, and open the meeting link a few minutes before the program begins. \nRegistration is available through Virginia State University’s Small Farm Outreach Program. \n  \nRead our full-length articles about Educational and grant opportunities here!
