Community Rallies at Historic Fleenor Farm for Neighbor in Need
In an era often dominated by stress and widespread concerns, it’s easy to lose sight of the profound good that exists in the world. Yet, sometimes, a powerful catalyst emerges to remind us of humanity’s enduring compassion. This past Saturday, June 28, 2025, the Fleenor Farm in Bristol, Virginia, became just such a beacon, showcasing the timeless spirit of community that has long been the bedrock of America.

The picturesque, rural neighborhood bore witness to an extraordinary gathering as residents converged with a singular, heartfelt purpose: to support a neighbor facing immense hardship. Amanda Collins, a cherished, longtime friend of the Fleenor family, recently received a diagnosis of a large and aggressive brain tumor and is currently undergoing treatment at the University of North Carolina. In a testament to their deep-rooted bonds, Sabrina Fleenor and Louetta Canter, alongside a dedicated team of numerous volunteers, spearheaded a fundraising event to alleviate the significant burden of Amanda’s travel and medical expenses. Every dollar raised from the event will directly contribute to these crucial costs.

The Fleenor Farm itself, a long-standing fixture in the Bristol community, offered the perfect backdrop for this display of solidarity. Known for its rich agricultural heritage, the farm is more than just a place of business; it’s a hub for community events, embodying the values of hard work, family, and local connection. The Fleenor family has been deeply involved in the local agricultural scene for generations, with their current endeavors including Washington County Meat Packing and Livestock and Fleenor Farms, which offers agritourism activities like corn mazes and hay rides, fostering a strong bond with the wider community. This deep connection undoubtedly contributed to the overwhelming turnout.

The fundraiser was a resounding success, a testament to meticulous organization and effective outreach. While an exact headcount was difficult to obtain, the farm was undeniably packed with attendees. The atmosphere was vibrant and uplifting, filled with the sounds of happy conversations, laughter, and the shared commitment to helping.

Attendees enjoyed delicious hot dogs expertly cooked by Keith and Sabrina Fleenor. The event featured a variety of engaging activities, including raffles, door prizes, a silent auction, Cake Walk, and a lively game of Bingo. The prizes on offer for all segments were notably impressive, clearly indicating the considerable effort and generosity of those who secured donations.

Sabrina Fleenor, visibly moved by the outpouring of support. Shared, “Amanda and I clogged together (many moons ago). She was always so encouraging and willing to help anyone! So this is our chance to help her and her family!”
She went on to say, ““Back where I come from… some say it’s a backwards place, narrow minds on the narrow way.” (Quoting a country song called Back Where I Come From by Mac Anally).
“Last night we were blessed to host a benefit for a very special person I have been blessed to know and grow up with! Let me tell you…our community showed up!!! Not only in attendance but in support! People from in and around our community donated, worked hours, helped set up, showed up and helped cleanup! But I make it a point to say, that’s where I come from! Thank you to everyone for absolutely everything to make the event possible! An extra thank you to my Aunt Louetta for all her hard work and dedication to this special project!!! Much love to Amanda Collins and her family and all of our community!!!”

Amanda Collins had this to say about the event, “I do not have the words to describe tonight with my sweet friends that worked so hard to put this together for me! I will never forget each of you! Such joy! Thank you isn’t enough!”
While the precise amount of money raised remains to be tallied, the enthusiastic participation and spending by attendees suggested a substantial sum. Regardless of the final figure, the true triumph of the event lay in its fundamental nature. It served as a powerful reaffirmation that America’s strength has always stemmed from its communities’ willingness to unite and uplift those in need. For newcomers to the area, like myself, witnessing neighbors come together for such a noble cause, all while fostering a joyful and engaging environment, was profoundly gratifying. This fundraiser perfectly encapsulated the purity of heart and action that defines the American spirit of neighborly support.
There is a GoFundMe campaign for Amanda. If you would like to donate, please do so here.
