NC State Extension will hold Selection Today for Sustainability Tomorrow Nov. 20, 2026, at Uwharrie Ridge Farms, 5141 Lou Cranford Road in Denton. The official registration form gives the hours as 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern. Attendance is free, and the North Carolina Cattlemen’s Association sponsors lunch. Breeding decisions on the program
Announced subjects include selection principles and tools, cow selection and culling, sire and replacement-female evaluation, and breeding systems and crossbreeding. Host Mark Wilburn will discuss the farm’s history and management. Suggested preparation is to identify the breeding or selection decision you want to understand better. Describe the goal in practical terms and note which records you already use to assess progress. Those notes can help you ask a focused question without assuming that a general session provides an individual herd plan.
Suggested questions for the discussion
Consider what information would support a comparison between alternatives and which conditions could change the decision. Ask how to interpret a tool within the context of the operation’s goals rather than treating one measurement as a complete answer. Keep a list of resources you want to examine after the workshop. These are preparation prompts, not a claim that the session covers a particular breed or guarantees an improvement in performance or profitability. A farm example can be informative while still requiring further evaluation before applying it elsewhere.
