Fall High Tunnel Organic Nutrient Management

Build Soil Fertility in a High Tunnel
A hands-on Virginia State University Small Farm Outreach Program workshop on Wednesday, October 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. in Warfield, Virginia, focuses on nutrient management in high tunnels. This workshop will show growers how to use organic soil nutrients inside a high tunnel to support fall vegetables.
Alex Hessler, a small-farm nutrient management specialist with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, will lead the training. This workshop helps growers understand soil fertility in protected growing systems and make practical nutrient-management decisions for cool-season crops.
Organic Inputs and Fall Vegetable Production
High tunnels can extend the growing season, but intensive production can also make careful soil and nutrient management increasingly important. Participants will learn how to use organic nutrient materials to improve soil conditions while supporting productive fall vegetable crops.
The session connects soil fertility with crop performance and gives growers an opportunity to consider how nutrient-management practices fit into an overall high-tunnel production plan.
A Hands-On Outdoor Workshop
Organizers plan to include hands-on work in the high tunnel if time permits, including planting a variety of fall vegetable plants. Because the workshop includes outdoor activity, participants should dress for the weather and wear appropriate footwear.
The workshop will be held at 2778 Cut Bank Road in Warfield. You can register through the official Virginia State University event listing. Farmers should check that page for any updates before traveling.
