Forestry and Wildlife Education in Oak Ridge

UT AgResearch and UT Extension will hold a Woods and Wildlife Field Day on October 22. The event will be held at the Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center and UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Eastern at the UT Arboretum Auditorium, 901 S. Illinois Avenue.

The event is part of UT AgResearch’s statewide field day program. It offers landowners, farmers, and other participants a chance to learn about current university research. They can also talk directly with faculty and staff. Woods and Wildlife programs focus on managing forestland, wildlife habitat, and natural resources. The field day is particularly relevant to Appalachian Highlands landowners. They manage wooded acreage alongside farms, pasture, or other working lands.

Previous Woods and Wildlife field days mixed classroom or auditorium presentations with field stops. These stops let participants see research and management practices in the landscape. UT’s 2026 agenda should move beyond these earlier programs, though they provide useful context.

A Resource for Woodland Owners

Woodland management decisions can affect timber value, wildlife habitat, recreation, invasive-species pressure, forest health, and the long-term condition of family land. Field days can help landowners learn what university researchers are studying and identify Extension or natural-resource professionals who may be able to assist with questions on their own property.

The UT Arboretum is part of the Forest Resources AgResearch and Education Center and serves as an outdoor research and education site. Its Oak Ridge location makes the October program accessible to many landowners in East Tennessee and the wider Appalachian Highlands.
