Bristol, VA—On a blustery Small Business Saturday, November 29, 2025, I was on State Street covering the annual surge of holiday shoppers. Between the quaint cafes and familiar storefronts, I discovered a place that instantly stood out like a black cat in a pile of snow: The Bristol Boo-tique (503 State Street).
From the street, the vibe is unmistakable—a little dark, a little quirky, and entirely magnetic. I went in, talked with co-owner Alesia Wood, her husband Brad, and their Tarot Manager Sleighter Davis, and left impressed. This isn’t just a shop; it’s a living room for the wonderfully odd, a place where Appalachian art meets macabre curiosities.

The Oddball Aesthetic of the Boo-tique: Niche & Handmade
“We wanted a shop that appeals to what we call the oddballs,” Alesia explained. “That can be a general term. We carry metaphysical things, a little darker, macabre, but also niche, nerd, and gamer stuff. Basically, the things you can’t easily find in big box stores.”

The Boo-tique fills a crucial gap for the 20s and 30s crowd looking for authentic, anti-mass-produced goods. Forget the same old corporate shirts; these are handmade. Most of the art and creations are sourced from talented vendors and artists across East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia, like Chelsea Lowe, a local illustrator who has even done contract work for the new Star Wars animated series on Netflix.

The Boo-Tique is Community Driven: A Volunteer Heart
It’s a truly community-driven space, operating on a volunteer model in which vendors—who already have an investment in the store—donate their time to keep the doors open. As both Charles Franklin and Sleighter Davis attested, people genuinely just want to be here.
Decoding the Divine: Tarot, Oracle, and Mediumship
One of the most engaging aspects of the Boo-tique is its commitment to the metaphysical arts, which are often misunderstood. Sleighter Davis is the shop’s go-to expert for these services.
For readers unfamiliar with these terms, here’s a quick primer:

Tarot: Not a fortune-telling tool, but a deck of 78 cards used as a meditative tool or form of guidance. A Tarot reading involves interpreting the cards drawn to gain insight into relationships, career, or life decisions.

Oracle: Similar to Tarot but less rigid. Oracle cards are used to provide spiritual advice, encouragement, or wisdom, often focused on positive affirmations and finding one’s path.

Mediumship: The practice of a Medium connecting with or attempting to communicate with spirits of the deceased. This is often used to bring comfort or closure to the living.
These services, along with classes and special events, confirm Alesia’s statement: “We’ve turned into more of a community. We’re not just a store. We also do classes and events.”
Good Vibes and Good Deeds

Lady Morticia and the Bridge Home Mission
While the theme may be a little “dark,” the shop’s heart is pure gold.
The spirit of giving shines through in their work with local non-profit organizations, most notably the Bridge Home No-Kill Shelter. The Boo-tique serves as a donation center for the shelter and hosts a special vendor booth where items are donated or explicitly made for the shelter.
“They do not pay a vendor booth rent. We do not take commission,” Alesia proudly shared. “One hundred percent of the profit goes straight back to the shelter.”
Their commitment to Bridge Home is also literal: the shop’s 15-year-old “big old chunker” mascot, Lady Morticia, was adopted from the shelter. Lady Morticia, who has FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), is a fixture in the store, lounging among the curiosities and affirming the shop’s loving, inclusive nature.

A Permanent Staple in the Appalachian Highlands
Having started as a temporary pop-up show, the Bristol Boo-tique has blossomed into a permanent staple on State Street. It’s a testament to the fact that supporting local and embracing the unusual is a recipe for success in the Appalachian Highlands. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind gift, a dose of local culture, or just a place to feel welcome among fellow “oddballs,” stop in and say hello.
